Barbell tensile strength
Tensile strength (PSI) measures how much a barbell resists permanent bending. Entry bars run around 150,000 PSI; serious powerlifting and Olympic bars run 190,000 PSI and up; true competition bars hit 215,000+ PSI. It's a different spec from "whip" (how much the bar flexes and recoils during a lift) and from knurling (the grip texture, ranging coarse to medium to passive). Sleeve and bearing type
A barbell's sleeves (the rotating ends the plates load onto) spin via either bushings (simpler, smoother under moderate speed, common on general-fitness bars) or needle bearings (faster spin, less friction, the standard for Olympic weightlifting bars). Neither is "better" outright — it depends on whether the lifts you do (snatches, cleans) benefit from fast rotation.
Weight-plate tolerance
Cast-iron plates are typically accurate only to about ±2-3% of stated weight — a "45lb" plate can genuinely be 44 or 46.5lb. Calibrated competition plates are held to roughly ±10 grams. Plate types: bumper vs iron vs urethane
Bumper plates are rubber-coated and built to be dropped from overhead, holding a full 450mm diameter regardless of weight so a loaded bar sits at a consistent height. Iron/steel plates are not drop-rated — dropping them can chip concrete and damage the plate or floor. Urethane plates are a premium middle ground: drop-rated like bumpers but thinner and quieter, at a higher price. Details in Bumper vs Iron Plates.
Rack specs: steel gauge and uprights
Steel gauge numbers run backwards — a lower gauge number means thicker steel. 11-gauge (~0.120in) is meaningfully thicker than 12-gauge (~0.105in), and both beat thin 14-gauge (~0.075in) budget steel. Upright size (2x2in vs 3x3in) and hardware diameter (5/8in vs 1in vs the weaker 1/2in found on budget racks) matter as much as gauge alone — a high weight-capacity claim on thin steel with small hardware is a red flag. Bench specs
12 inches is the long-standing standard bench pad width; narrower pads feel unstable under heavy pressing. Gap-vs-no-gap seat/back pad design is mostly a preference and clearance issue. The number that actually gates what you can safely load is the bench's own stated weight capacity — separate from any rack it's used under. See What Bench Should I Buy?
Adjustable vs fixed dumbbells
Adjustable dumbbells win on cost-per-pound and floor space only up to a point — past roughly 50-75lb per hand, the incremental cost of an adjustable set can approach a comparable fixed-weight rack, and adjustables trade quick-change convenience for a lower max weight ceiling per unit. Flooring and ceiling height
Flooring thickness should match drop load: thin interlocking foam (3/8-1/2in) suits bodyweight and light dumbbell work, 3/4in rubber handles moderate barbell training without dropping, and genuine 1.5-2in stall mats or a dedicated platform are what's rated for real barbell drops (Olympic lifts, failed reps). Separately, ceiling clearance for a rack needs to account for the pull-up bar height plus a real margin for the user's height and jump — a common shortfall when a rack's pull-up bar sits at 82-84in and the room has under 8ft of clearance.
